Save Rose Creek

Our vision is for lower Rose Creek to be an open space park providing recreational and learning opportunities and a clean, healthy, aesthetically pleasing environment for residents, visitors, businesses, and native plants and animals, while serving as an accessible link for bicyclists and pedestrians to move between Rose Canyon Park, Marian Bear Park, Mission Bay Park, and surrounding communities.

Valentine's Day Gardening Extravaganza - - Saturday, Feb 14

The Nature School - Native Plant Garden Maintenance *

Join us for a Valentine's Day Gardening Extravaganza on Saturday February 14 from 10 AM until 1 PM.

Thanks to bountiful rain in December, the native plant garden and trees are doing great. Unfortunately the weeds are doing just as well. We need 15 people to help with a gardening party. We'll be weeding, watering and maybe even a bit of planting.

We'll have snacks, gardening tools and know how. And special Valentine's day chocolate treats!

All we need is your fingers and arms to get the garden cleaned up. If you need community service hours, come on down and pick up three hours of work and leave with verification in your hands.

If anyone has a pickup truck and would be in to doing a run up to Miramar for mulch, we could use the mulch.

Meet behind the Rose Creek Cottage 2525 Garnet Ave in Pacific Beach. Park on Fogg Street just South of Garnet.

Perfect for community service credit hours. Please wear sunscreen, closed-toe shoes, and a hat. Volunteers should bring water and heavy-duty work or gardening gloves. More information Karin Zirk 858-405-7503 or kzirk@earthlink.net

* Part of the Rose Creek Wetlands & Salt Marsh Restoration and Nature Education Preserve project by The Nature Institute. New habitat restoration supported by The Nature Institute and the City of San Diego Environmental Services Dept.

Last Child in the Woods Author to speak, February 24

Last Child in the Woods

The recipient of the 2008 Audubon Medal, Richard Louv identified a phenomenon we all knew existed but couldn't quite articulate: nature-deficit disorder. Since its initial publication, his book Last Child in the Woods has created a national conversation about the disconnection between children and nature, and his message has galvanized an international movement. Now, three years later, we have reached a tipping point, with the book inspiring Leave No Child Inside initiatives throughout the country.

The Friends of Rose Creek is committed to maintaining nature in our neighborhood so our children have a place to experience the wonder of Great Blue Heron's fishing or a Mullet spawning.

Richard will be at Point Loma Nazarene College on February 24. For details click here.

4th Saturday Tree Watering @ 1 PM (February 28)

We have eleven trees that need fifteen gallons of water each. Plus fifteen smaller plants that needs about a gallon each. We have tools, equipment and a water source. It takes about three human hours to complete the task depending on how fast you work. This means you will need to be there for about an hour and a half if two people are watering. An hour if we get three volunteers.
